His mission is to deceive the children of men by lying to them and to an extent, he is succeeding.
One of the ways is with abortion. I don't think that it could be any clearer than Elder Oaks' talk from last October.
From the perspective of the plan of salvation, one of the most serious abuses of children is to deny them birth. This is a worldwide trend. The national birthrate in the United States is the lowest in 25 years,2 and the birthrates in most European and Asian countries have been below replacement levels for many years. This is not just a religious issue. As rising generations diminish in numbers, cultures and even nations are hollowed out and eventually disappear.
One cause of the diminishing birthrate is the practice of abortion. Worldwide, there are estimated to be more than 40 million abortions per year.3 Many laws permit or even promote abortion, but to us this is a great evil.
The Lord sees murder as murder. It is thwarting His plan for the eternal happiness of man. It has become a systematic denial of spirits from bodies. It is individuals acting as God, without respect for Him or His authority.
But Satan will lie. He will do many things to cloud the real issues at hand. He will tell us that a woman's right to decide what to do with her body is an inherent choice without repercussions to her spirit. He skirts around the law of chastity and fidelity. He downplays responsibility. He will persuade us that the outcome is the problem and not the initial act/sin. That perfection of body is required for completion of the cycle of birth. That there is nothing to be learned from the smallest among us. That the very agency that we have always existed with should be used selfishly. That not a one of us is strong enough to bear the burdens placed before us; forced upon us or chosen by us. He tells us that life with a body isn't all that great. He tells us that he knows when life begins. He tells us that a lesser evil prevents a greater evil; that by making abortion safe, women won't go to back alley butchers.
Satan tries to be God without respect for Him or His authority.
The answer to all of life's problems is the gospel. It's pretty cut and dried. Christ wouldn't say it if it wasn't true. He is not a liar.
What if some of the time spent opposing abortion and lobbying for laws preventing it was spent preaching the gospel?
What if some of the time spent lobbying for a woman's right to choose was spent preaching the gospel?
What if some of the time spent counselling women on the pros/cons of abortion were spent preaching the gospel?
What if we weren't afraid to preach the gospel?
There is wickedness in the world and there are purveyors of it. I think the mass of humanity wants to do what's right. What if, like the Anti-Nephi-Lehis, we said "Thanks, but no thanks, Korihor. We see through your lies" and we booted those who speak Satan's language out?
It would mean, number one, that we are well versed enough in the gospel that we know the difference. It would mean that we gathered enough believers to an area that such an idea can't even take root, let alone blossom. It would mean that we were courageous enough to stand for the right and to not be moved.
